If you were to meet your future employer today, what do you think they would say to you? Who would it be? What kind of encouraging words would you want to hear them tell you to help you along your path to succeed? Personally, I have no idea who I’d want to work for yet. But I want them to be able to make me laugh. That way I know I don’t have to be afraid of them. (Aren’t I silly?)
I want to work in the radio industry, I’m not quite sure yet as what though. I went to a panel the other day with some people being the guest speakers with different jobs in radio and they told us that you need to have passion for starters and that there will always be jobs in radio. They seemed to really want us to roll that into our heads as if we were all unsure of ourselves. I remember thinking the whole time “If none of us believed there weren’t jobs in radio, why would any of us be here taking this program?” it hit me later that I could’ve probably been the only person in the room thinking this.
The speakers told us that you’ve got to nudge your way in and ‘bother’ people. Constantly e-mail/call in and ask to speak to someone. Volunteer, do the little jobs, work for free even. Be friendly, but most importantly- be passionate. Have a personality. Think and be yourself, don’t listen to anyone else’s ideas. If you have the personality, then you can do anything really.
Having people who are well known tell you to just be passionate, sometimes it may not feel like enough. But just helping you out and getting you to try and network and discover your own key to succeed- that’s the idea. On paper at the end of the day, it may not sound like a huge deal, but in reality, the bigger picture it really is.
I want my future employer to be able to tell me that I can do anything. Not limit myself to a few things. I want them to encourage me to learn and better everything- even when I think it’s perfect. What can I do to make this better? What can I do to improve how this sounds? It’s always easier if they can make me feel like I can talk to them. Laughter is the best medicine in my books.
What are the most important things a future employer can do to encourage innovation?
